FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A North Texas man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for fatally stabbing his wife's teenage lover in the heart with a butter knife.

A Tarrant County jury sentenced 31-year-old Luis Hernandez on Thursday for killing 18-year-old Devin Toler in June 2013. The Fort Worth men lived at the same apartment complex and Hernandez confronted Toler, who was playing outside with his ex-girlfriend and 1-year-old daughter.

Authorities say Hernandez instigated a fistfight and then used the knife to stab Toler. He later died at an area hospital.

Hernandez's attorney says the fatal stabbing was in self-defense.
