HOUSTON (AP) — The fate of a Texas cancer researcher is back in the hands of a jury deliberating allegations that she poisoned a colleague, who also was her lover, by lacing his coffee with a sweet-tasting chemical found in antifreeze.

Deliberations in the Houston trial of Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo resumed Friday.

The 43-year-old breast cancer doctor faces up to life in prison if convicted of aggravated assault.

The Harris County jury took the day off Thursday after beginning deliberations the day before.

Prosecutors have told jurors the affair between Gonzalez-Angulo and Dr. George Blumenschein (bloo-mehn-SHYNE') turned into a "fatal attraction" after he spurned her in favor of his longtime girlfriend.

Gonzalez-Angulo's attorneys have argued others might have been responsible for poisoning Blumenschein with ethylene glycol, including his girlfriend. Blumenschein survived.
