Texas Tech vs Ole Miss (Sept. 1, 2018)

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have stumbled into the 2018 season after an embarrassing showing in front of a class full of recruits in the Houston stands. The Ole Miss Rebels did whatever they wanted on offense on their way to a 47-27 win over Texas Tech.

The Rebels flexed their muscles early with a two-play, 69-yard touchdown drive to open the game. Texas Tech and starting quarterback McLane Carter didn't blink, returning Ole Miss' serve with a touchdown drive of their own. Ten plays and 90 yards later, including an incredible catch from T.J. Vasher, Texas Tech would tie it up.

Ole Miss would take the kick-off back for a touchdown. Another year, another bad start for the special teams. After the big play, Texas Tech would trade two punts for another Ole Miss touchdown and a field goal to fall to 24-7 in the first quarter.

During the back-and-forth of the first quarter, McLane Carter went down with an apparent leg injury and was carted off the field. There has been no update on his condition.

Texas Tech would also lose starting corner Des Smith on a targeting call on 3rd down. Another year, and more third down penalties that extend an opponent's drives.

Texas Tech, with true freshman Alan Bowman and a rushing attack, would recover in the second quarter and make up some ground, going into halftime with a 30-17 deficit. Clayton Hatfield would finish the day 2-for-2 on field goals.

The second half held very little to be excited about, with Texas Tech getting another targeting call; Vaughnte Dorsey got the boot this time around.

Texas Tech would cut the lead to 10 in the third quarter after a second Da'Leon Ward touchdown to make the score 37-27 in favor of Ole Miss. The defense would get two huge stops with a forced punt and a forced fumble in back-to-back drives, but the offense could not convert on either stop.

Ole Miss would dominate the 4th quarter to finish 47-27.
