WALLISVILLE, Texas (AP) — A man and his son have survived an alligator attack at a lake near Houston.

Chambers County sheriff's officials say 42-year-old James Hurley and his 13-year-old son, Kaleb, were in Cedar Hill Park on Sunday when an alligator grabbed the boy's arm while he was swimming in Lake Charlotte and dragged him underwater.

Witnesses told authorities that the boy's father then ran into the water to save his son. He was bitten by the same alligator on the leg, and his son kicked the alligator until it released him.

Authorities said father and son were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, and both were in serious but stable condition.

Sheriff Brian Hawthorne says it's nesting season for alligators, which have been displaced by the recent flooding.
