GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — The search for a 12-year-old Houston girl who disappeared while swimming off Galveston Island is set to continue after being suspended for the night.

Houston media outlets report Samira Carlon was at the beach with a school group of about 20 from KIPP Voyage Academy for Girls in Houston on Thursday afternoon.

Galveston Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis said the students when in the water in groups of five while supervised by two chaperones. He said two students from one group on a sandbar were having problems and a chaperone helped them back to shore. According to Davis, when the chaperone turned around, Samira had disappeared.

The Galveston Beach Patrol and U.S. Coast Guard will continue the search Friday morning.
