A 42-year old San Angelo Police Officer was injured Sunday night when the driver of a Ford F-150 backed into his patrol car.

The incident occurred just after 11:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Rio Concho Drive where San Angelo Police were blocking traffic while providing assistance to other law enforcement agencies.

64-year-old Manuel Trevino Rodriguez of San Angelo was driving westbound in the 300 block of Rio Concho Drive when he encountered the detour and was instructed by Officers to turn around.   Rodriguez reportedly pulled into a nearby parking lot then drove in reverse back onto Rio Conch Drive where his truck’s tailgate collided with an SAPD patrol vehicle, pinning its Officer in-between the Officer’s door and vehicle’s passenger compartment.  The Officer was retrieving something from inside his vehicle when the crash occurred.

Officers made contact with Rodriguez and noted the odor of alcohol coming from him person.  Rodriguez performed and failed standardized field sobriety testing and was subsequently arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to the Tom Green County Jail.

The injured Officer was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment of Minor injuries and later released.  The Officer has been with the Department 7.5-years.
