The Central Bobcats' win over Permian Friday night was proof that special teams can make the difference between winning and not.

Jaden Coates scored two special teams touchdowns and Central beat the Panthers 31-20, although the game wasn't as close as the score would indicate.  Permian's last score in the 4th quarter came after the outcome was no longer in doubt.

A fake field-goal and a kickoff return, both for touchdowns and a field goal account for more than half of Central's points.  Knowing your team can do that adds even more weapons to your arsenal.  Even when you have an athlete like Maverick McIvor.

And then, there's the defense.  If I'm Midland High or Amarillo Tascosa, I'm afraid.  Very afraid.  But more than that.  I'm trying to find a weakness in the Bobcat defense.  Good luck.

Central's defense held Permian to 213 yards rushing, about half what the Panthers have been averaging per game.   That and SEVEN QB sacks when Permian tried to throw effectively shut down the Panthers offensively.

Permian head coach Blake Feldt called it “a nightmare of a night.”  Combine all the things the Bobcats did right and first half injuries to Permian starting quarterback Steve Steen and Panthers' offense line leader Pablo Olivares and you almost feel sorry for Permian.  Almost.

And now the undefeated Bobcats head to Midland High Friday night before wrapping up the regular season at home against Tascosa.

Could another perfect season be in the offing?

Hawks Rumble For Revenge

The Wall defense slammed the clamps on 4th ranked Midland Christian for most of the game and the always powerful Hawks offense combined for another win over another team that beat Wall last season with a 40 to 21 pounding of the Mustangs.  This is the third time this season the Hawks have beaten a team that beat them in 2016.

The Hawks stay perfect and play a district came at Tornillo next weekend.  Then they wrap up the regular season at home against Kermit.
