This is National School Bus Safety Week and Texas troopers will be giving up their patrol cars to ride school buses in a child safety effort.

In Texas, it is illegal to pass any school bus that is stopped and operating a visual signal -- either flashing red lights or a stop sign.

According to Sargent Justin Baker, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, in Tom Green County, "Troopers will be riding the buses this week, watching for drivers who violate the law." Those fines could be as high as $1,250.

All together, in 2015 and so far in 2016, Texas troopers have issued close to 1,100 citations for illegally passing stopped school buses.
