NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (AP) — Police say nearly two-dozen shots were fired at a group of soldiers from Fort Hood after they intervened in an argument at a New Braunfels park.

A police statement says the seven soldiers arrived at the park early Monday and saw a couple arguing.

They told investigators the situation had calmed but the couple retrieved a gun from their car and the man fired at the soldiers, who found cover behind their vehicles.

One of the soldiers fired on the man and struck him in the elbow.

Everyone fled the scene but the soldiers later returned to speak with police. The couple was found at a gas station.

The 24-year-old man and his 26-year-old girlfriend, both from San Antonio, each was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
