Written by Lisa Loomer, “Expecting Isabel” is a comedy about the adventures of a Manhattan couple trying to have a baby – by any means necessary – as they negotiate the fertility trade, the adoption industry and their own families. Loomer, who is also a screenwriter, actress and stand-up comic, uses humor to soothe the ache of infertility in “Expecting Isabel,” which won the 1999 American Theatre Critics Association Steinberg New Play Award after premiering in Washington, D.C., in 1998. Loomer also won the Steinberg award for “The Waiting Room” (1994). Her work has been recognized with the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award.

The ASU production of “Expecting Isabel” is directed by Mike Burnett, assistant professor of theatre and assistant director of University Theatre. The student cast comprises Julia Timme as Miranda and Saxon Rhoad as Nick, with Chloë Husted, Alexander Caldwell, Sean Gibbons, Tessa Handlin, Megan Croyle, Leanna Montoya and Jakob Garner as various characters. Elizabeth Lichtenstein is the female understudy.

The production crew includes Josiah Hernandez, stage manager; Cecilie Lamb, assistant stage manager; Samantha Lewis, scenic design; Nick Ellis, costume design; Jina Kim, sound design; Callie Stenson, projection design; Mason Gable, master electrician and light board operator; Jose Villedas, sound board operator; Katharine Patrick, wardrobe crew chief; Collette Miller and Brennan Friday, wardrobe crew and dressers; Bryce Real, master carpenter and deck chief; Dallas Wright, Leslie Schniers and Tracey Lumby, carpenters; Jana Freeman and Julia McDaniel, electricians; Columbus Hickman, house manager; and Taylor Dabbs, maître d’.
