EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A 75-year-old El Paso man has been sentenced to more than a decade in prison in the 2014 fatal stabbing of his wife.

Isaac Duarte was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison. Duarte pleaded guilty Monday to stabbing his 66-year-old wife, Maria, after he believed she was cheating on him.

Duarte had faced up to 99 years in prison in the case.

Testimony from the defense's witnesses Tuesday focused on Duarte's age and health issues.

Duarte's attorney argued that his client would probably die in prison with any term over five years. The attorney says he is pleased with the verdict.

The couple's daughter, Sandra Elabour, said Duarte's age and health were irrelevant in the case. She said she had hoped for a 20- or 30-year sentence.
