30 Year Sentence For Fatal Carjacking Shooting Handed Down

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — A Southeast Texas man must serve 30 years in federal prison for his role in a 2013 fatal shooting during an attempted carjacking in Beaumont.

River Shynette Gobert was sentenced Tuesday in Beaumont. The 22-year-old Gobert last August pleaded guilty to carjacking resulting in death.

Another Beaumont man, Jonathan Demond Patton, last summer also pleaded guilty to carjacking resulting in death and in December was sentenced to 40 years.

Investigators say the victim, Daryl Dwayne Fontenot, had been asleep in his vehicle and then refused to give his keys to Patton and Gobert. Both attackers blamed the other for the June 2013 fatal shooting.

Patton and Gobert earlier pleaded guilty to wounding another man during an attempted robbery minutes before the slaying and both received state prison terms.
