HOUSTON (AP) — Officials at the Houston Zoo say a record 2.46 million people went to the park in 2015.

That's up 80,000 from the previous year and marks the eighth straight year of growth.

The attendance number also makes the Houston Zoo, which was founded in 1922, second now only to the San Diego Zoo among the nation's zoos that charge for admission.

The zoo covers 55 acres and has more than 6,000 animals. One highlight of 2015 was the opening of a new gorilla exhibit.
