Wrong Way Drunk Driver Sentenced To 50 Years

HOUSTON (AP) — A driver whose wrong-way truck hit an oncoming pickup, killing five of the seven people in it, has admitted being drunk during the 2014 Texas wreck.

Efraim Carmona pleaded guilty Tuesday in Houston to five counts of intoxication manslaughter.

Carmona gets a 50-year prison sentence. He must serve 25 years before becoming eligible for parole. Carmona could have received prison sentences totaling 110 years.

Killed were the driver, 41-year-old Valentin Garcia, and four passengers, including a child. Two others were injured.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia told reporters shortly after the June 2014 crash that Carmona had a blood-alcohol content of .23 percent, almost triple the legal limit for driving.
