DALLAS (AP) — Thousands of students in Texas have a day off after a winter storm dumped several inches of snow, canceled hundreds of flights and left roads icy.

Schools in Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Denton and about 200 miles south in Austin canceled classes Thursday. Schools in Wichita Falls also closed due to wintry weather.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the Dallas-Fort Worth area until midday Thursday amid freezing temperatures. Sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-30s were expected Thursday afternoon.

Flightaware.com reports nearly 800 flights canceled Thursday at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Dallas Love Field had about 40 canceled flights.

DFW spokesman David Magana (muh-GAHN'-yuh) says the storm dumped more than 3 inches of snow. As many as 600 travelers were stranded overnight at terminals.
