FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A Texas woman has testified that her husband mentioned the Bible as she tried to stop him from carving a pentagram on the back of their 6-year-old son.

Brent Bartel of Richland Hills faces up to life in prison if convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 2012 incident. Testimony continues Wednesday.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram (http://bit.ly/1O4WZac ) reports Lindy Bartel testified Tuesday that she awoke to her son's screams and saw her husband using a box cutter on the boy.

Lindy Bartel grabbed the tool and said her husband told her the Bible says "women are sinful and only the blood of innocent will do."

The boy, who's now 9, was treated for his wounds.

Defense attorneys say Brent Bartel has a history of mental illness.
