DALLAS (AP) — The head of human resources for the Dallas Independent School District has quit after sending and receiving inappropriate messages.

Superintendent Mike Miles late Thursday announced the resignation of Carmen Darville.

Miles says both agreed that some instant messages exchanged between Darville and her staff were inappropriate. The superintendent did not elaborate.

The Dallas Morning News obtained some of the messages sent via part of the district's software system. The newspaper reports the remarks involved race, religion, old age and criticism of co-workers.

Darville on Wednesday had apologized for communications that she "mistakenly considered private" and for judgment errors.

One of her assistants, Jose "Tony" Munoz, also resigned.

Darville was hired in 2012 and earned nearly $191,000 annually. Munoz, with the district since 2003, earned $132,000 per year.
