Saturday afternoon's Texas Tech football game against UTEP was pure domination by the Red Raiders as they beat the Miners 69-20 at Jones AT&T Stadium. Saturday's game was the annual "White Out" and Celebrate Cotton game for Texas Tech Football.

Halfway through the first quarter, Texas Tech jumped out to a 10-0 lead. It would have been a 14-0 lead, but a chop block penalty erased a touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to Devin Lauderdale. The resulting 32-yard field goal by Michael Barden capped a 12-play, 65-yard drive.

Mahomes started at quarterback for the second straight game for Tech. In three-plus quarters of action, he went 18/33 passing for 361 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed six times for 32 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas Tech's leading receivers in the win were Jakeem Grant, seven receptions for 141 yards and one touchdown; and Reginald Davis, three receptions for 72 yards and one touchdown.

With 1:56 left in the first quarter, the Miners got on the board with a Mack Leftwich 24 yard touchdown pass to Aaron Jones.  The touchdown tightened the Texas Tech lead to 10-7.

However, the Red Raiders immediately responded on their next drive, as Patrick Mahomes found Justin Stockton open in space, and Stockton hauled in a 46 yard touchdown reception.  The extra point extended Texas Tech's lead to 17-7 with less than a minute left in the quarter.

When the second quarter started, Aaron Jones asserted his authority again, with a 91 yard touchdown run that ended with him running up the visiting locker room ramp in shades of Bo Jackson at the Kingdome in the 1980s. With the Jones touchdown, UTEP cut the Tech lead to 17-14.

However, Jones' touchdown would be his last major contribution in the game. According to Don Williams, Jones was carted off the sideline at the start of halftime with an ankle injury and he did not return.

Meanwhile, Mahomes put the Red Raiders on his back in second quarter.  After Jones' touchdown, he threw two more touchdown passes and rushed in a third from one yard out. By the time halftime arrived, Texas Tech's lead ballooned to 38-17.
