Texas Tech Alum Gil Roberts Advances in 2016 Olympics
Gil Roberts took second place in the 400-meter dash event at the Rio Olympics, earning him advancement to Saturday's semi-finals match.
Roberts, an Oklahoma City native who graduated from Texas Tech University in 2009, is a two-time All-American for the school's track and field team. He ran a 45.27 in heat one of the Olympic event Friday.
Back in 2014, Roberts won his second U.S. Championship, winning the gold at the U.S. Track and Field Championship in Sacramento, California.
Roberts is set to run Saturday, August 13 at 6:44 p.m. His opponents are: Isaac Makwala (Botswana); Rafał Omelko (Poland); Ali Khamis (Bahrain); Steven Gardiner (Bahamas); Bralon Taplin (Grenada); Yoandys Lescay (Cuba); and Matthew Hudson-Smith (Great Britain).
It's safe to say that Lubbock and the entire Texas Tech student body will have their guns up for Roberts when he runs in Saturday's semi-finals.
