TABC Targets Illegal Alcohol Sales To Underage Drinkers

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas alcohol regulators will target communities with major colleges and universities in a crackdown on illegal sales to underage drinkers.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission says the undercover operation begins in early September when classes have resumed for the fall term.

TABC agents and volunteers under age 21, which is the legal drinking age in Texas, will work together. Agency officials on Monday said the stings will involve establishments such as convenience and liquor stores.

Violators ultimately can lose their licenses to sell alcohol and face other regulatory penalties.

A similar Texas sting earlier this year, during spring break, targeted areas popular with college students taking time off. TABC agents conducted stings at 930 retailers, resulting in 92 violations.
