HOUSTON (AP) — A SWAT situation in Houston has ended with police rescuing a woman and killing a man described as her estranged husband who was holding her at gunpoint.

Officers were called to a southwest Houston motel after a bystander saw a gunman forcing a woman into a vehicle.

When officers found the vehicle nearby with the woman inside, they summoned a SWAT team. When the gunman over more than two hours refused commands to surrender, police used noise diversions to distract him. That allowed the woman to flee to the safety of an officer.

Police say the man then got out of the car and when he pointed his gun at police, two officers opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police internal affairs officers are investigating the case.
