PORT ARANSAS, Texas (AP) — Corpus Christi's police chief has died in a single-vehicle accident in Port Aransas.

Port Aransas Police Chief Scott Burroughs says Corpus Christi chief Floyd Simpson died Sunday evening. Authorities say Simpson was riding a motorcycle heading south to Corpus Christi on a highway when a pickup traveling in the opposite direction crossed the center lane.

Police say a vehicle in front of Simpson drove off the roadway in an evasive action, and he laid down his motorcycle. Simpson was wearing a helmet, but it became dislodged and his head hit the pavement.

Simpson was taken to Corpus Christi Medical Center Bay Area Hospital where he later died.

Simpson was a 25-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department before becoming Corpus Christi's first black chief of police in 2012.
