SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A San Antonio man who told police he punched his 2-month-old daughter because she would not stop crying must serve life in prison for her 2010 death.

Dominique Reed was sentenced Monday in San Antonio. The 25-year-old father in November pleaded no contest to murder.

Prosecutors charged Reed with capital murder in the fatal beating of his daughter, Zaniyah, as he watched her.

An autopsy indicated the girl had more than a dozen rib fractures. She died on the way to a hospital after Reed returned the unresponsive baby to her mother.

Reed pleaded no contest to the lesser charge as his trial was to begin. He'll be eligible for parole in 30 years.

A capital murder conviction carries a penalty of execution or life in prison without parole.
