MAGNOLIA, Texas (AP) — Officers in the Houston area are seeking a man who stole a police car in a chase that ended near some railroad tracks.

Magnolia police say the suspect fled early Thursday after abandoning the law enforcement vehicle that was tracked via GPS.

Police in Magnolia, about 30 miles northwest of Houston, noticed a suspicious SUV and then the vehicle sped away. Officers using spike strips finally got the SUV to stop.

Police say the driver ran into some woods, officers followed, then the suspect jumped into a patrol car and drove off.

The police car was later found dumped near some tracks. Investigators are trying to determine whether the man hopped aboard a passing train.

Authorities found methamphetamine, marijuana and a stolen gun in the SUV.
