WACO, Texas (AP) — A Central Texas law officer has been fired after being charged in an online sting into alleged soliciting of girls for sex.

McLennan County Deputy Constable Steve Canava (kuh-NAH'-vuh) was put on unpaid leave after his Feb. 27 arrest. County officials on Wednesday announced his dismissal.

Investigators say the 51-year-old Canava was arrested after driving to a Waco parking lot to meet a person he thought was a 17-year-old girl. An affidavit says the ex-Waco police officer tried to solicit a minor to have sex with him, allegedly offering $100.

McLennan County sheriff's deputies arrested more than two dozen men in the sting in which detectives posed as underage girls and as human traffickers.

Canava was free on bond when he was fired March 6.
