MIDLAND, Texas (AP) — Hundreds of friends, family members and law enforcement officers have gathered to honor a slain West Texas sheriff's deputy.

The funeral for Midland County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Naylor was held on Tuesday in Midland. He was later buried at Prairie Haven Cemetery in Hobbs, New Mexico.

A longtime friend said during the service that Naylor loved being a deputy sheriff.

Authorities say Naylor was among a group of deputies serving a warrant Thursday at the home of a suspected sex offender when he was shot in the head.

Dan William Higgins is in Midland County Jail on $2.6 million bond. He is charged with capital murder of an officer and with aggravated sexual assault relating to the warrant being served.
