MATHIS, Texas (AP) — A disabled-accessible fishing pier has opened at Lake Corpus Christi State Park as part of $750,000 in improvements at the site near Mathis.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department sponsored the project, which includes a nearly 400-foot floating dock.

Visitors took part in the grand opening Tuesday.

The old pier was determined to be unsafe in 2009 and later torn down. The new pier is made of wood and aluminum.

Superintendent Robbie Merritt says the new pier has more room for fishing.
