DENTON, Texas (AP) — Police in North Texas are trying to determine the source of a box of Halloween candy that contained hydrocodone pills after a 5-year-old boy nearly ate one.

Officers were called to a Denton home on Saturday night after the boy's mother reported he received the box of candy from a piñata at a party. The hosts tell Denton police they used leftover candy from trick-or-treating to fill the piñata.

Police say the candy in the box had been replaced with about 36 pills. They say the boy spit out the painkiller because it tasted bad. He wasn't injured.
