DENTON, Texas (AP) — A convicted hired gunman faces up to 20 years in prison for shooting a Carrollton woman in the face after being solicited by her husband to kill her.

Thirty-nine-year-old Michael Lorence was convicted Thursday of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for the 2012 wounding of Nancy Howard. The penalty phase begins Friday in Denton.

Prosecutors say John Franklin Howard wanted to be with a mistress and hired Lorence to kill his spouse.

Nancy Howard, who's since divorced her husband, was shot in the face while in the driveway of the couple's home. She survived but lost her left eye. John Franklin Howard was convicted of attempted capital murder and sentenced to life in prison.
