Here's Amanda's story:

American Cancer Society has been a support system for family members in the past, but in 2013, I learned firsthand about the love that the Society offers. At the age of 33, my life consisted of work, my wonderful husband, Edward, and our two amazing children, Hannah and Zane.

But one day my life changed. I was diagnosed on June 21st, 2013 with invasive ductal carcinoma.

After my diagnosis, I sought all information possible, and the American Cancer Society delivered. They provided my husband and me with money for travel expenses for out-of-town appointments and also booked hotel rooms for us at no cost.

But the Society has been so much more than that. After surgery, I started six rounds of aggressive chemotherapy over three months. After my third round, I found myself overwhelmed and sleepless, due to pain and anxiety. I called the Society’s toll-free helpline, and the voice on the other end was so warm and comforting. That call helped me realize I was not a burden and I was worth all the love and support I was receiving from family and friends.  This gave me the hope I was starting to lose. After finishing my final round of chemotherapy, my oncologist and I made the decision for me to start taking Tamoxifen, a drug that helps prevent my cancer from returning. The Society has helped in funding research of this drug and many more life-saving drugs.
