ABILENE, Texas (AP) — Abilene police have returned fire and wounded a gunman during a domestic disturbance outside a house.

No officers were hurt in the gunfire early Monday. A police statement says the 31-year-old suspect was transported to an Abilene hospital for treatment of injuries not believed to be critical.

Abilene police responded to a call about an armed man trying to get into a house to reach his girlfriend, who was inside with several other people.

Officers located the suspect near the back door. Authorities say the suspect ignored police commands and shot at two officers, but missed. Officers returned fire, striking the man.

Police say the suspect is expected to face charges of aggravated assault against a peace officer.

Both officers are on administrative leave amid a review of the shooting.
