The recital will begin at 7 p.m. in the EFA Building’s Eldon Black Recital Hall and is open free to the public. The musical program will include “Divertissment Grec” by Philippe Gaubert, “Fantaisie, op. 24” by Camille Saint-Saens, “Trio for Flute, Viola and Harp” by Claude Debussy, “Histoire du Tango” by Astor Piazzolla, and “Entr’acte” by Jacques Ibert. Abeln will be accompanied by guest musicians Hope Cowan on harp and Mark Nordstrom on viola, as well as Dr. Constance Kelley, ASU associate professor of music, on flute.

In addition to her academic positions at UTEP, Abeln is the principal flutist for the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. She previously performed with the Sinfonica Orquestra Autonoma de Guadalajara, Mexico, and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra, and she has toured and performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin and completed a performance fellowship at Yale University, as well as a year of private study in Paris, France.

Abeln’s guest recital is also a precursor for ASU Flute Day on Sunday, Jan. 29, which will feature an entire day of free activities in the EFA Building for flute players and enthusiasts of all ages, including a seminar by Abeln.

Flute Day activities will begin at 9 a.m. and will include a group warm-up for all participants, a flute choir reading session, masterclasses with ASU flute instructors and Abeln’s seminar. A showcase recital will cap the day starting at 3:30 p.m. in the Eldon Black Recital Hall.

All Flute Day activities are open free to the public, and flute players are invited to bring their instruments and participate. More details and a registration form are available online at www.angelo.edu/fluteday, though registration is not required.
