CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Four people have been rescued from a sinking boat in the Gulf of Mexico shortly after it was spotted fishing illegally in U.S. waters.

The U.S. Coast Guard tells the Corpus Christi Caller-Times (http://bit.ly/1A9PBVL ) that the Mexican vessel was spotted Saturday night about 30 miles off South Padre Island. Authorities say the area is north of the Mexican maritime border.

A Coast Guard crew intercepted the craft and discovered it was sinking. Three men and a minor were taken to the Coast Guard station on South Padre Island and then transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The Coast Guard says four other foreign boats were found earlier Saturday fishing inside the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone and chased away.
