No movie ends up looking exactly like its creators initially intended, but that's doubly true for science fiction an fantasy films. In the case of something as beloved as George Lucas' 'Star Wars,' seeing the original designs and concepts for characters as iconic as Darth Vader and R2-D2 can be downright shocking. Some early storyboards from the 1977 classic have made their way online and these rough sketches paint a very different portrait of some of your favorite heroes and villains in the 'Star Wars' universe.

Released to promote the upcoming book 'Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy' (and originally compiled by Vulture), the work of storyboard artists Alex Tavoularis, Joe Johnston, and Ivan Beddoes gives us a fascinating look at how this universe evolved. Take the early sketch of Darth Vader, which has the same basic gist of the final design but is different enough to be completely shocking. Even more crazy are the sketches of Chewbacca with Spock ears and C-3PO with an all-too-human (mournful, even) face.  Our personal favorite is the early design of Yoda, which depicts him a pipe-smoking create torn straight from the pages of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The original gallery contains additional details (trivia that every 'Star Wars' fan should know!), but you can check out the images for yourself below. We don't know about you, but we kind of love the propeller-headed R2-D2.
