AMARILLO, Texas (AP) — A convicted killer from Harris County has escaped from a prison in Amarillo.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark says a corrections officer at the Neal Unit spotted 34-year-old Marvin Garcia and fired several shots at him but Garcia climbed a fence and fled.

It's not certain if Garcia was hit. The escape took place about 3:40 a.m. Monday.

Garcia in June 2010 began serving a 25-year sentence for murder.

The Neal Unit in Amarillo can hold about 1,300 prisoners.
