HOUSTON (AP) — Police say the driver of an SUV is dead after crashing into a man on horseback, then hitting a telephone pole and fence in northwest Houston.

The crash occurred around 8 p.m. Sunday when the driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe rammed into a man riding a horse. Both had been traveling westbound on West Little York Road in the Acres Home area.

After hitting the horse, the SUV slammed into the telephone pole and a chain-link fence. The driver, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital.

The rider of the horse was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Some Houston media reported Monday that the horse had also been killed. But police were not immediately confirming that.
