Genevieve Pfluger Mejia, M.D. is an obstetrician and gynecologist at San Angelo Community Medical Center, and also serves as the Medical Director for the Laura Bush Institute of Women’s Health. This program provides free mammograms for the under-insured and uninsured. In this video, Dr. Mejia explains that women with a family history with breast cancer have a increased risk of developing breast cancer. If a woman has a first degree relative (mother or sister or grandparent) with breast cancer that risk in increased by 2x. If a woman has two first degree relatives with breast cancer the risk is increased by 3x. If anyone in your family has had breast cancer, contact your provider so the proper screening measures can be put into place. Early detection is the key.
