University Theatre at Angelo State University will present “Smokey Joe’s Café – The Songs of Leiber and Stoller” for its spring musical March 12-15 in the ASU Auditorium.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 12-14, with matinees at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, and Sunday, March 15. Tickets are $8 for the general public, $4 for non-ASU students and $3 for ASU students. Admission is free for Arts at ASU subscribers and ASU activity card holders. The ASU Auditorium is located in the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Avenue N.

A musical revue, “Smokey Joe’s Café – The Songs of Leiber and Stoller” opened on Broadway in 1995 and features hits from the 1950s and ‘60s written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and recorded by stars of that era, from Elvis Presley and Peggy Lee to Ben E. King and the Coasters. The original cast recording won a Grammy Award in 1996.

ASU’s assistant director of University Theatre, Michael Burnett, is directing and designing scenery for “Smokey Joe’s Café.” Julie Hamil, choral director of Lee Middle School, is the music director. Guest choreographers/directors include Elena Kent and Megan Mioduski of Be Theatre, Angela Jones-Brooks of San Angelo Broadway Academy, Suzanne Smith and Eric Midgley of San Angelo Civic Ballet and Cathryn Sanders of Angelo Civic Theatre. ASU technical director Matt Chilcoat is the lead lighting designer and costumer Eldra Sanford is the lead costume designer.

The ensemble cast of ASU students includes Chloé Casey, Nick S. Cline, Sean Gibbons, Collyn Glaspie, Janae Hatchett, Josiah Hernandez, Samantha Lewis, Lauren McCollum, Julia McDaniel, Cameron O’Briant, Bryce Real, Adam Rich, Morgan Slaughter and Kala Young.

The student production staff includes Glaspie and O’Briant, student choreographers; Caden Glass, projection designer; Rich, Glaspie, Katharine Patrick, Tessa Handlin, Brittani Beggs and Nick Ellis, costume designers; Casey, Glaspie, Patrick, McDaniel, Heather Walker, Elizabeth Holland and Angela Baumann, lighting designers; Baumann, stage manager; Miquela Farley and Patrick, assistant stage managers; Alison Morantes, deck chief; Real and Sean Gibbons, co-master carpenters; Holland, properties master/master electrician; Megan Croyle, light board operator; Adam Nettrouer, sound board operator; Ethan Lankford and Tom Zimmerman, electricians/spot operators; Brittani Beggs, wardrobe master; Nick Ellis, assistant wardrobe master; and Samantha Lewis, charge painter.

Tickets will go on sale in the ASU box office for Arts at ASU subscribers on Thursday, March 5, and for the general public on Monday, March 9. The ASU box office is open 2-6 p.m. weekdays. For reservations and/or ticket information, call 325-942-2000.
