ASU to Host Dallas Cellist

Angelo State University will host a recital by Christopher Adkins, principal cellist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive. The recital, which is free and open to the public, will be in the Eldon Black Recital Hall of the EFA Building. The program will include “Pastorale” and Suite in G major for cello solo by Bach, Sonata for cello solo by George Crumb, “Pavane de la Belle au bois dormant” and “The Fairy Garden” by Maurice Ravel, “Songs My Mother Taught Me” by Dvorak/Kreisler, “Evening Prayer” from “Hansel and Gretel” by Engelbert Humperdinck, “Cinderella’s Stepsisters” from “Cendrillon” by Jules Massenet, “A Frog He Went a-Courting” by Paul Hindemith and “Melodie” from “Orfeo” by Christoph Gluck.

A native of Dallas, Adkins earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of North Texas and a Master of Music at Yale University. He previously held the positions of principal cellist with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, assistant principal cellist of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver and principal cellist for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, before returning to Dallas in 1987 to occupy the symphony chair once held by his former teacher, the late Lev Aronson.

Adkins serves on the faculty of Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas. He remains an active recitalist and chamber musician. A member of a large musical family, he and six of his brothers and sisters formed the Adkins String Ensemble, whose performances have been praised by the Dallas Morning News.
