Angelo State University will host a dedication of the newly renovated Ben & Alvetta Kelly Weight Room at 1:30 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 12, in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, 2235 S. Jackson St.The weight room renovations, funded by a donation from ASU alumnus Mike Millegan, include new flooring, new weight racks and platforms to provide increased safety for ASU’s student-athletes.

Millegan’s $300,000 donation also has been used to establish the Michael H. Millegan Academic Athletic Enhancement Endowment, the Ben and Alvetta Kelly Scholarship Fund and the Michael H. Millegan Curriculum Enhancement Endowment.

Millegan, a former Ram football player from 1976-80 and a member of the 1978 national championship football team, is the former president of global wholesale at Verizon, where he has worked for more than 30 years. He served on the Business Advisory Council for the ASU College of Business, was named the 2005 Angelo State Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and was a Wells Fargo Distinguished Lecturer in 2003. He was named one of the 2014 Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America by Savoy magazine. Millegan received his bachelor’s degree in business management in 1980 and a master’s degree in business administration from Angelo State in 1982.

ASU Hall of Honor member Ben Kelly, a former San Angelo College football player, was one of the first black football players to compete for a previously all-white college football team in Texas. He also spent 29 years running the San Angelo Boys and Girls Club. In May, ASU renamed its physical fitness facility the Ben Kelly Center for Human Performance.
