More than 900 local and area fourth graders will get an up-close look at some of the wonders of science during Angelo State University’s spring “Science Days!” on Feb. 24 and 26, and March 3, 5 and 10 in the Cavness Science Building and Vincent Nursing-Physical Science Building on the ASU campus.

Students from Reagan, San Angelo Christian, Angelo Catholic School and Brady ISD elementary schools will attend on Feb. 24; Bowie, McGill and Junction ISD elementary students will attend on Feb. 26; students from Crockett, Christoval ISD and Grape Creek ISD elementaries will attend on March 3; Wall, Irion County and Menard ISD elementary students will attend on March 5; and students from Austin Elementary, Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TLCA) and Potter’s Hand School will attend on March 10.

During Science Days!, students will see specimens from the Angelo State Natural History Collections (ASNHC), showing the variety of wildlife found in the Concho Valley, and participate in several hands-on science experiments in the Cavness Building, 2460 Dena Drive. They will also learn about physics and physical therapy and participate in several interesting math activities in the Vincent Building, 2333 Vanderventer St. Following lunch, the grand finale will be a chemistry magic show in Room 100 of the Cavness Building.

The activities are conducted by ASU faculty, staff and students from the Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, Physical Therapy, and Physics and Geosciences Departments. Students from ASU’s Tri-Beta biology honor society and San Angelo Central High School also provide volunteer support.

Activities will begin at 9:20 a.m. each day and culminate with the magic show starting at 12:20 p.m.

The Science Days! program is intended to provide elementary students with the opportunity to experience science in an educational setting and to interest them in science at an early age. Studies show that once students reach the upper elementary grades, it is much harder to stimulate their interest in the sciences. Since its inception in 2006, the Science Days! program has hosted more than 10,000 local and area fourth graders.

Marcia Revelez, ASNHC manager, organizes the Science Days! program during each fall and spring semester. Area elementary schools interested in participating in future sessions of Science Days! can contact her at 325-486-6699.
