ASU Multicultural Events

The Angelo State Multicultural Center will be hosting 2 events next week.
Angelo State University’s Multicultural Center will host a screening of the film “La Onda Chicana” (The Chicano Wave) by award-winning documentarian John J. Valadez on Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

The screening will begin at 6 p.m. in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center and is open free to the public. The film details the history of Mexican-American music, featuring Los Lobos, Linda Ronstadt, Ritchie Valens, Selena, Los Tigres de Norte, Freddy Fender, Sam the Sham, Cannibal and the Headhunters, and Little Joe.

Valadez has been producing and directing award-winning, nationally broadcast documentaries for PBS and CNN for the past 14 years. His films include “Visiones: Latino Arts and Culture” for PBS and “High Stakes Testing,” an hour-long investigative documentary for the primetime documentary series “CNN Presents.” Valadez is a Rockefeller Fellow, PBS/CPB Producers Academy Fellow and founding member of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP). He currently sits on the Board of Trustees of the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar.

The screening of “Lo Onda Chicana” is being funded through ASU’s Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) STEM and Articulation Programs.

Angelo State University’s Multicultural Center will host a Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Thursday, Sept. 18, in the lobby of the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

The celebration will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open free to the public. It will focus on the origins of Hispanic culture with an emphasis on the ancient civilizations of Latin America. Activities will include music and crafts, as well as authentic food samples and educational posters.
