The event is sponsored by Art in Uncommon Places, which has installed more than a half-million dollars in public artwork along the Red Arroyo Trail. The events include a fun run, crafts for kids, live art demonstrations and food. Proceeds will fund future public artwork and activities in San Angelo.

At 14 feet wide and four miles in total length, the cement Red Arroyo Trail stretches from Sherwood Way to Knickerbocker Road. Since its completion earlier this year, it has become a popular spot for runners, walkers, bikers, skaters … and now art-lovers.

The schedule of events:

  • 6 a.m.-3 p.m. – En Plein Aire Competition. En plein aire is the act of painting outdoors. The artist seeks to reproduce the actual visual conditions at the time of the painting. More than a dozen artists will be creating their interpretations of the open-air museum … with a $1,000 prize on the line.
  • 7 a.m.-6 p.m. – Open Air Museum. Stroll through the trail’s newly installed public art pieces. Activities will include stone carvers, rock stackers, other live creators and live music. An experience for all the senses is promised.
  • 8 a.m.-9 a.m. – Open Air Yoga. Local yogis will lead this free session. Participants are urged to dress comfy and to bring water and a mat for stretching.
  • 8:30 a.m. – The Artful 5K Fun Run. Runners and walkers along a 5K or 1-mile course will serve as a canvas … so they should wear white and expect to be painted. Registration is $25 at ArtInUncommonPlaces.org. Runners can also register at 7 a.m. before the race.
  • 10 a.m.-11 a.m. – Art Festival Bike Parade. Children age 1-16 can show off their skills decorating bikes and wagons. Wild imaginations will be rewarded. Prizes will be given for most artistic, most patriotic, most colorful, funniest, and most creative.
  • 10 a.m.-6 p.m. – Children’s Creative District. Kids will have a chance to shine while learning about different types of art, including shadow drawing, weaving, water gun painting and rock painting. Works will be displayed during the Sweets & Spirits Stroll.
  • 3 p.m. Friday-3 p.m. Saturday -- $1,000 Art Installation Challenge. Seven teams will work ‘round the clock to design a winning entry … and claim the $1,000 prize. To join the contest, contact Alicia Young at AliciaYoungArt@gmail.com.
