Angelo State Marks Banned Books Week

In recognition of the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week, Angelo State University will host its annual Banned Books Readout from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

The Readout, sponsored by ASU’s chapter of the Sigma Tau Delta national English honor society, will feature volunteer students, faculty and staff reading 5-minute-long passages from a favorite work on the ALA’s list of banned or challenged books.

In addition, ASU’s Porter Henderson Library will have a display of books that have historically been banned or challenged and daily activities during the week.

Since 1982, the American Library Association (ALA) has rallied librarians, booksellers, authors, publishers, teachers, and readers of all types to celebrate and defend the freedom to read with Banned Books Week, which this year is Sept. 27-Oct. 3. Hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of banned or challenged books and hosting a variety of events.
