2017 Oscar Nominations: ‘La La Land’ Leads with a Record-Tying 14 Nominations

2016 Oscars Winners List
ABC

Ah, can you smell it? The aroma of scorching hot awards season debates is already in the air! The nominees for the 2017 Oscars were announced bright and early this morning – or should we say dark and early, as the ScreenCrush team beat the sunrise for the big announcement.

The Academy switched up the usual tradition of naming the year’s nominees in front of a live audience and opted for a digital live steam via Good Morning America and YouTube. The nominees were announced in a pre-recorded video by Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Emmanuel Lubezki, Jason Reitman, Ken Watanabe, and Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.

So are we in for a third year-in-a-row of #OscarsSoWhite? Luckily not. Despite the fact that La La Land earned 14 nominations, tying with All About Eve and Titanic for the most in Oscars history, The Academy had plenty of love for performers and directors of color. Moonlight earned eight nominations, while Fences earned four and Hidden Figures earned three noms including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The documentary category also featured three of 2016’s best and most relevant docs, Ava DuVernay’s 13th, Raoul Peck’s I Am Not Your Negro, and Ezra Edelman’s O.J. Simpson: Made In America.

The 89th Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air on Sunday, February 26 at 5:30 pm PT/8:30pm ET on ABC. See the full list of nominees below:
