Twelve candidates filed to run for San Angelo City Council or police chief in the May 7 election before Friday’s 5 p.m. filing deadline.

Along with police chief, the District 1, 3 and 5 City Council seats will be on the ballot. Those who filed are:

  • Police Chief – Frank Carter, Jeff Davis, Mike Hernandez and Tim Vasquez.
  • District 1 – Trinidad Aguirre Jr. and Bill Richardson.
  • District 3 – Daniel Cardenas and Harry Thomas.
  • District 5 – R.A. Cantrell, Matthew Lane Carter, Elizabeth Grindstaff and Martin William Guinn.

The elected police chief will serve a four-year term. The winning City Council candidates will serve three-year terms.

Voters must be registered to vote by April 7 to be eligible to cast a ballot in the election. Voter registration information can be found at votetomgreencounty.org.

All registered voters within the city limits will be eligible to vote in the police chief’s race. Eligible voters in City Council Districts 1, 3 and 5 will also elect their representatives. Voters can access a map of the Council districts at cosatx.us/council. Determining which district one lives in can be determined by clicking the GIS map viewer on the same page.

Early voting will be April 25 to May 3 in the Tom Green County Elections Office on the first floor of the Edd B. Keyes Building, 113 W. Beauregard Ave. Voters will have a choice of voting by paper or electronic ballot during early voting.

On Election Day, only electronic ballots will be available. Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. May 7. Voters may cast ballots that day at any of 21 locations, which can be found at cosatx.us/May2016, along with other election information.

Candidates in the election will draw for the order of names on the ballot at 10 a.m. Feb. 25 in the City Clerk’s office in Room 210 on the second floor of City Hall, 72 W. College Ave.
