FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A North Texas toddler found alone in a smoke-filled apartment during a fire call has been rescued and his father was later arrested.

Fort Worth police say 34-year-old Vincent Van Arsdale says he left his year-old son alone Tuesday morning while driving his wife to work.

The boy was being treated for smoke inhalation and taken into the care of Child Protective Services.

Neighbors reported smoke and firefighters broke into the unit, discovering some food burning unattended on a stove. There was no fire.

Van Arsdale was arrested on charges of child abandonment/endangerment, possession of marijuana and eight outstanding warrants.

Police didn't immediately provide additional custody information on Van Arsdale.
